Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still access my house while flood gates are installed?

Yes! you can open the door and step over the gates. We can also install all gates and leave one gate to be installed by you later that will allow walk-in access to your home.

Why do I need Hurridam? Can't I buy and install the gates myself?

Yes. You can actually buy them on Amazon and do the entire thing yourself if you want. In fact, we tried it and after realizing how many variables are involved we decided to start this company. In short, it's not as easy as it looks.

How do I know they will work?

The Flood Gates were designed, developed, tested & patented in the UK and also patented in the US. Testing was performed in the UK & passed British Kite Mark testing to prevent flood water entering up to 24in. The US FloodGates are manufactured under the same UK standards. We take great care in pre-installation and deployment to ensure that the dams remain intact and waterproof. That said, hurricanes are major storm events and we cannot guarantee that the gates will remain intact. For instance if a tree falls on them, or a boat runs through them they will likely fail.

What if water rises more then 26"?

Well, you're going to flood. We are working on a vertical integration system that will allow extended height gates, but for now, if the flood is more then 26" high the gates will be useless.

Can flood gates be used in windows?

Yes, however if the wind is wider than 64" it will require multiple gates, which gets tricky.

What if there is an opening in our house that you cannot foolproof?

If we don't feel confident that we can foolproof your entire home, then we won't sell to you. For us is 100% or 0%. There is no sense in protecting almost all the openings, because it only takes one opening to ruin a home.

Where are you based?

We're based on Anna Maria Island but offer flood prevention solutions to Anna Maria, Bradenton, Sarasota, Palmetto, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and other surrounding areas.

Why are Hurridam Floodgates better than the competition?

There are two main types of gates, rigid and flexible. The rigid gates are made of plastic. Plastic has no 'give' so if something hits it can crack. Also, plastic gets brittle over time and with exposure to sun. Our gates use a thick neoprene sleeve which flexes with the flow of water. It's also extremely strong so it resists punctures and tears. The sleeve is also replaceable so if it wears out or gets damaged it is inexpensive to get a replacement sleeve.

How expensive are Flood Gates?

Well, they are not cheap. A typical ranch house may cost between $10,000 and $30,000 to protect. It's a lot of money, but most homeowners realize that this expense is still far less than recovering from a flood event. We started this company to help our fellow islanders remain dry, not to price gouge. We never sell any product over MSRP and work hard to provide superior protection with as few gates as possible.

Does Hurridam work with insurance companies to provide discounted premiums?

Currently, we do not. However you can contact your carrier and ask if any discounts are available. We're a newer company and we are hopeful that as we grow carriers will take note and begin to provide more premium discounts.

What if water leaks through the walls of our house?

Part of our process is to evaluate all exterior building envelope penetrations. This includes electrical outlets, HVAC, Cable/data lines, and any other 'thing' that penetrates the exterior of your home below 26". As part of our pre-installation we waterproof these penetrations with caulk or spray foam insulation.  We recommend raising exterior outlets to above 26" but if this is not possible we can also attempt to waterproof the boxes when we deploy your floodgates.
